Places to Visit in Stamford

As small towns go, Stamford is one of the finest. A stunning Georgian masterpiece, there really is little more you need do here but walk. However, if you are looking for exciting places to visit, fun activities or a slice of culture, here's a list of places to go in and around Stamford.

Burghley House

This stunning Edwardian house & its surrounding parklands (primarily designed in the 18th Century by Capability Brown) is an absolute must-see destination if you visit Stamford soon. It sits right on the edge of town, within walking distance of restaurants, shops and amenities but set back in the most tranquil of surroundings. Take a walk around the ancient trees in the parkland, book a tour of the house, or enjoy lunch in the delightful Orangery. If you're an avid tv & movie fan, it's also worth noting that the house has been featured in Pride and Prejudice, the more recent tv series- The Crown, with featuring famous names often frequenting the town between shoots! It's such a beautiful place; it's kinda hard to leave at the end of the day! Burghley simply must be on your to-do list.

The Rutland Vineyard

Located just outside Stamford, in the village of Ketton, stands The Rutland Vineyard, a single-site vineyard with tasting barn and cafe. Opened in 2021, this beautiful place offers not only the opportunity to taste some outstanding English wines but also a chance to learn about vine growing and about the local area with their guided tours. After a wander through the vineyard, head back to the tasting barn for coffee and homemade cakes or a cheese board. So very Stamford, The Rutland Vineyard is undoubtedly a destination not to be missed.

St Martins Antiques Centre

I really love this place. It has something for both the antiques & vintage enthusiasts and the tourist looking for somewhere to wander. It has everything from rustic furniture to crockery to vintage clothing and garden accessories. And in true antique style, a real Aladdin's cave of beautiful things. I'm a rummager, so it suits me down to the ground! It is located at the top of St Martins near Stamford High School, but an effortless walk from the town centre, just across the old stone bridge over the river Welland. I'd recommend a wander around this beautiful shop followed by a drink at the Bull & Swan pub just a few doors down—the perfect weekend afternoon.

Tolethorpe Hall & Stamford Shakespeare Company

Glorious, glorious, glorious! We are incredibly fortunate to have the stunning Tolethorpe Hall just down the road from us here in Stamford. The Hall is home to Stamford Shakespeare Company, who perform several highly regarded plays each year in the outdoor open-air theatre. Bring a picnic, enjoy a glass of bubbly and get cosy with a blanket for what will always be a fantastic performance. This summer's offerings include Measure for Measure and the delightful As You Like It. Bonus points for their successful youth programme supporting the next generation of talent too!

Woolfox

Brand new, Woolfox is the ultimate luxury lifestyle members club. And what a magnificent place it is. From a state-of-the-art golf course to a gym, studio and pool, Woolfox has something to offer everyone. It is so aesthetically pleasing it hurts, and the food in the cafe is to die for. Fika, a well-known local Scandi cafe brand, recently opened its third site here at Woolfox. The club is for members only, but the cafe on-site is open to the public. Head on over for a coffee, and while you're there, I'd recommend enquiring about the membership packages on offer. If anything, I'd say it's worth it just for the pool. One of the most stunning I've seen in a long time!

Tallington Lakes

Just outside Stamford lies Tallington Lakes- a unique activities centre with watersports and a range of different sporting opportunities on land too. From stand-up paddle boarding in the lake to skiing and snowboarding on the dry ski slope, Tallington has something for everyone. There is an outdoor pool that opens in the summer and a climbing wall & tobogganing slope. You don't have to be an expert in any of these skills, as the instructors are on hand for one-to-one sessions if you'd like to try your luck as a beginner. Don't worry if you don't have the gear either; their pro shop is well-equipped for every sport you might wish to try at the centre. All in all, Tallington Lakes offers a great day out for any age group.

Stamford Arts Centre

Stamford Arts is a multi-arts venue offering a rich cultural selection for audiences and participants to enjoy. The theatre scene here is thriving, with touring shows choosing to stop here and perform for sell-out crowds regularly. The centre also boasts a popular cinema scene, showing world cinema & art-house films along with plenty of new releases. It's a small theatre but comfortable and right in the centre of town. If workshops are more your thing, the Arts Centre puts on regular weekly classes and one-off sessions in everything from yoga to pottery to modern songwriting for teens. I highly recommend dropping in and asking for a list of what's on this week, as I'm sure you'll find something to suit!

Stamford Library & Heritage Museum

The working library sits in the centre of town on the high street, and combined with a museum, provides plenty for the community. Following the closure of the main Stamford museum on Broad Street many years ago, Stamford library opened a small heritage display within its building. Here you will find information on the town's history and its people. It's a great little space, super informative, hands-on for the children and easily accessible to everyone. There is no charge to enter; although small, it is well worth visiting!
